Essilor 2017-2018 Student Scholarship Program Now Open

By Essilor News

DALLAS – Jan. 24, 2018 – Essilor of America announces its 2017-2018 Essilor Student Scholarship Program. The program, formerly known as the Varilux® Student Grant Award Program, is open to optometry students who have experience in the clinic’s optical dispensary.

“Essilor has proudly sponsored this program for more than 30 years,” says Janelle Routhier, OD, F.A.A.O., senior director of customer development at Essilor of America. “It’s just part of our ongoing commitment to optometric education, optometry students and the optometric profession.”

Interested students must create a case report of no more than 2,000 words about patients who have been fitted with Essilor lenses. Reports should include the patient’s old and new prescription, occupation, hobbies, unique problem solving applications and pertinent information. Applicants submit completed reports to their school’s faculty and/or clinical staff who will select one submission based on dispensing skills, application of Essilor lenses to patient needs, analysis of the case(s), and analysis of the lens design and lens performance (optional).

Faculty and staff at participating schools select the winning case report. The winners’ schools receive $1,000 scholarships, and their case reports are entered into the national competition. The school with the national award winner will receive $5,000.

Zack Vonderach, OD, is a 2017 graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry and last year's National Award recipient. “As an optometry student, it was easy to think that the eye exam stopped after providing the raw numbers to a prescription. The Essilor Student Scholarship helped me find ways to think past just the numbers. It was a reminder that you can make a big impact on people's lives by taking that extra step to get the patient in a lens that will satisfy their individual visual demands,” he says. “The generosity of the scholarship is also a huge financial help. I am very grateful for what Essilor has done for me personally, for how they continue to lead the way in helping patients see to the best of their ability, and for their commitment to optometry students everywhere.”

Entries must be postmarked or received via email by February 1, 2018 and can be submitted to Danne Ventura, F.A.A.O. at or at Essilor of America, Inc., 13555 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75234.
